Visiting the famous Thean Hou Temple, Kuala Lumpur | Day trip in Kuala Lumpur

Another famous temple in KL, Thean Hou Temple!

Recently a friend of ours left from KL and their apartment had a beautiful pond with lots of tortoises and fishes in it. My little one loved tortoises and we used to visit them often for him to enjoy watching the fishes and the tortoises. Since they left, he had to be entertained with his dosage of tortoise watching! I remembered reading about the Thean Hou temple and the tortoise pond in their temple. Quickly, the traveller inside me decided to pay a visit to this Chinese temple in KL. Since the time of the month was near to the Chinese New year, this came as an ideal visit. More photos to follow in this post, so go ahead and enjoy!

Location of the temple:
It is located along Jalan Syed Putra which is easily accessible using the public transport and also using a taxi.

Things to relish in the Thean Hou temple:

1. The intricate architecture of the temple - elegant, traditional, well maintained with beautiful lanterns all over the ceiling
2. Tortoise pond - Children will love this, nicely maintained
3. Chinese Zodiac animals - Know more about your zodiac animal from the year you were born
4. A temple with a lot of traditional Chinese architecture and information including Fortune telling
5. Wonderful view of KL from the upper tier of the temple

Zodiac animals of the Chinese Calendar

There are 12 animals of the Chinese Zodiac and each of them represent the features of the people born in each year. For example, year 2012 is the year of the Dragon, you can check the characteristics of the person born in the year 2012.

You may see a lot of red colour being used in the Chinese Architecture, clothing even in the covers providing money - Red symbolises fortune and prosperity. And red colour does provide a spectacular look to the temple.

Huge Chinese red lanterns decorating the ceiling of the temple during the Chinese New Year! It would look even better during the nights when they are lit!

These are the patterns and architecture inside the temple. You may see people praying to the goddess, offering incense sticks, reading fortune sticks and knowing their fortune, lighting lamps, etc.

Thean Hou temple is one of the biggest Chinese temples in South east Asia. This Temple hosts the Thean Hou goddess along with 2 other goddess - The goddess of Mercy and The goddess of Waterfront. Thean Hou means The Heavenly Mother. The temple Prayer Hall is located in the 4th floor and this floor comprises of 3 altars. You may go up the alter and check the wonderful view of the KL from there.
