One Day Trip to Fraser's Hill from KL

Fraser's hill (Pahang, Malaysia) has always been in my list to visit as the weather is said to be on the cold side compared to Kuala Lumpur. The visit finally happened when we got an extended weekend recently. The trip was planned on Sunday and I was expecting shivering-chilling temperature as in Genting Highlands (somewhere between 17 to 24 degree celcius). But it was just the opposite! And looking at our full sleeve shirts and full pants, I could only sweat!

Fraser's Hill is a highland destination in Pahang which offers some nice scenic views, walking trails and bird watching along with some touristic activities like boating, horse riding and picnic. I am not very familiar with the Malaysian roads (read I don't drive!) but as far as my memory takes me, we took the Kuala Kubu Bharu route to Fraser's hill. It took us almost 2.5 hours with a restroom break in between and also another break along the lake via Kubu Bharu. The place looks picturesque along the lake and you are bound to stop and take pictures. There was even had a wooden climbing stairs and we were able to look at the lake at a better angle.

We found a touch-me-not plant on the way, along the lake.

There are a few things to do in Fraser's hill for your first time visit.
  • Visit the clock tower
  • Paddle a boat in Allan's water
  • Walk along the numerous trails for a real nature walking experience
  • Camp across the many scenic spots and have a picnic lunch
  • Visit the Nursery
When you are going with little kids, it will be difficult to visit the trails. But if your kids can walk without any complaints, you can also take a walk along the trails. Since we were travelling with a 13 months old baby, we didn't take the trails this time. Hoping for the next time!

We saw a board called Jeriau Waterfall near the road turning after Ye old Smokehouse. We didn't visit that also.

Our first stop was at Allan's water. We were unable to stop near the famous Clock Tower as it was super crowded and we couldn't get a parking spot. You can get a nice boat paddling experience especially if you have small kids. My 5 year old loved it. We were able to spend 15 mins with the boat. You can feed the fish and there is plenty of them near the entrance. This is definitely a kid's favourite spot. There is a height restriction and if I remember correctly, it was around 110cm for the kids to be allowed in the boat.

Our next stop was at the Nursery Fraser's Edible Garden. There are a lot of potted plants to buy - mint, thyme, rosemary, etc.,

You can see and also buy some vegetables like the cabbage as seen below. We also saw some chayote growing near the entrance. The staff were well informed and helped in choosing a good pot for me.

We then decided to visit the famous Ye old Smokehouse for a quick lunch. The house looked busy and we're informed of a wait time of 1 hour if we order. We decided to skip it as waiting for lunch for 1 hour seemed little tedious for us with kids. But the place looked nice and good for a few photographs.

Nature at its best!

We got back to the main area near the clock tower trying to fix some lunch but again the parking and the traffic was very bad that we decided to come down to Kuala Kubu Baru. The sky was also becoming cloudy and we heard a few thunders. Worrying we might be stuck with rain, we decided to drive back. The drive down the hill got me sick as we were constantly turning; so watch out if you have motion sickness. We got some local snacks and some coffee nearby and came back to KL for fixing our early dinner.

You can easily spend a whole day and do lot more than we did. You can take it slowly with kids, like we did. A great place for any nature lover and families with children who would like to spend a day quietly away from the city.
