Home made Ghee | Ghee Making

Being grown in a typical Indian family, there are some household food items which you never thought existed readymade. You would have seen your mother or grandmother or any elderly lady in the house making it every time freshly. When you grow up & see it in a grocery shelf, you know times have changed. You will eventually buy that one day or the other when the excuse of busy lives knock our doors. No matter what, the whole experience of doing it at home is indeed different.

Some recipes are hard coded and no matter what happens they bring in unknown happiness whenever you make them from scratch. It is worth the effort every time. Making ghee is one such recipe. I still remember my childhood when my mother used to prepare ghee; the appetising aroma filling the whole house for hours together.

When I think of making ghee, it's the aroma which will take over the whole house and linger for quite a while. It's the sheer yellow liquid which makes me smile proud at what I have done. And definitely makes me call my mom to share my seemingly small joy.

Making ghee at home is effortless and does not require much work to do. All you need is some unsalted butter and a pan. The heat does the work pretty well. Put your butter in a pan at room temperature on low to medium heat. You will start to see the butter melt down. Slowly, the melt down butter will start to froth on the top along with a crackling sound. You will hear the crackling sound gradually slow down and the bubbles also become much clearer. Once you hear the sound is almost down, switch off the flame. The heat in the pan will be enough to keep the ghee done to the correct level.

You will see little bubbles on the top and a clear yellow liquid. The liquid is the ghee. Below the ghee, you will see the milk solids settle down. Discard the solids and filter the ghee on to a bottle.

You are now all set to drizzle the home made ghee into a variety of dishes. A little hot rice and a spoonful of ghee along with some dhal powders will itself make my mouth water! And your's too!
