Stay Organised

Its 6AM and we all know the usual questions we hear in the morning.
"Where is my socks?"
"Did you see that blue folder inside that room?"
"I can't seem to find my phone! Can you give a ring?"

You hear the above, as often as everyday, or every other day!

Being organised is a habit which needs to be practiced everyday. During my college days, I used to keep the dress and accessories ready for the next day so that it helps me to get ready quickly for the next morning. But, only after kids and being a working woman, things started getting haywire sometimes. I had to be organised again in order to know where I'm heading to and how I can prepare myself better to reach the destination effortlessly (You make the effort before when organising stuff, so it shows as if you do it effortlessly).

Why Organise? How would it help us?
- Because it helps us to stay in the line, feel controlled and not worry about tomorrow/last minute
- Because it reduces our stress and preparation time.
- Because it will automatically become your routine - Take this one from me! Absolutely!
- You would already think about a backup plan if in case things go wrong (and you also have the time to mend it)
- Because you have a positive mindset to approach things when things are in place

How can we get the kids kick-started with the organising habit?

Start with the toys - Get them to tidy up after playing. I know it's difficult especially when you have children of different age groups and when their playtimes vary. But, it need not be so monotonous; rather doing it in a playful way will help them to learn this art in a better way. Make it a competition between you two to see who keeps the toys faster. Or count to a number and ask them to tidy up before the count finishes.

Set a routine to do the day-to-day activities - I am a big fan of routine. To me, the more you practise to do any thing everyday, it will automatically start to become your routine. Get the children to take their water bottle to the dining table before food time. Get them to do their homework within a set time so that they can expect what they need to do when the clock strikes.

Keep designated places for their stuff - The books need to be kept back in the book shelf. The school dresses need to be kept in a separate drawer and the usual clothes need a separate drawer. The crayons and pencils need to be kept neatly in their boxes. Train them to keep them in their places. They get better at it quite easily and soon. This will help them to know where they need to keep it and where they need to get it from.

Be an example yourself - We need to follow what we preach. You do not have to be 100% but trying to do it consciously still makes it a good example for them to follow.

Some easy tips for the grown-ups:
1. Plan your everyday menu in advance - have a chart and it's easy to follow that.
2. Get your dress ready and arranged for the next day. You can do it on Sunday so it is easy during the weekends.
3. Get yourself a small handbook and pen. You can keep it in your bag or pouch and take it everywhere. Get your simple notes or reminders in that written. Or for the tech geeks who love their phones and devices, get that to-do lists and edit it on the go with your lists and reminders.
4. Try to keep the home as much as sorted out when you have that time so its easy to maintain. It's a continuous process, so don't stress much. Keeping it going is the key.
5. Always try to keep a specified place for your things. You know where to look out for when you need them.
