The Inquisitive Mind | Write Tribe Festival Of Words June 2018
"Wow, this looks so far, mommy", said little V. He was looking down the stairs and held his mother's hand tight. His mother understood that he felt a little scared to look down. She acknowledged his reply and said, "But we can go slowly and talk when we are still going down". He nodded.
Little V is a little boy of 4 years. He loved going out with his mother every time. He looked down at the stairs and asked, "Why are there designs in the staircases, mommy?". She thought for a moment and realised that there were designs, which she failed to notice and started seeing the fine details. After a brief moment, she said, "The designs give a nice look for the stairs. Look at them, don't you think they are pretty?". "Yes, they do look pretty", he said.
They came down a few more stairs one by one. He was a small child and it was difficult to go fast for him.
"Mommy, why is the staircase going round and round?", he asked another question. She smiled at his question and replied, "That's called spiral. The way it's going round and round is called spiral. And the staircase is spiral because they want to keep something different". "Do you like it?", she asked back. "I don't know; it feels like my head is going round and round", he laughed as he said that and tilted his head back and forth in a spiralling movement. She smiled along.
By now, they have come down almost down and it might just be another floor to get to the ground.
"Mommy! The steps are smaller now and it was bigger then", he said surprisingly. He was in awe as he said that. She nodded and said, "Yes, they are getting smaller now. You are a very smart boy to notice it". Little V was smiling hearing his mom say smart and he repeated back, "Yes, I'm a smart boy".
The mummy was wondering on his questions on how a simple staircase can induce so many questions to his little brain. They notice little things which we don't even tend to notice. She was amazed at how he can register those minute details.
These questions are simple yet thought provoking. They seem easy but can be equally difficult to put it into words to explain. Nurture those questions. You should reply to them and answer them with all you can. The questions can stimulate their thought process and helps them to build their thinking. The questions can put perspectives to the children.
Enjoy the questions and learn along. Give them to power to ask questions. That is the best gift we can give them any time!

Oh yes. Children ask so many many questions. Unfortunately we do not have the patience to answer them all the time.
ReplyDeleteThey do! Always! And we as parents need to answer them and be there always.
