Reading prompts for kids

I have talked about the importance of reading before in my blog - here and here. I will forever talk about reading and how it forms a good habit for kids in early school years. In this blog post, I will share some Reading Prompts for children which you can use for the summer as a Reading challenge.

Reading is an activity which can’t be ignored even if you don’t have school happening. Ignoring reading during those holiday months and going back to school can in fact make it harder for them to get into a reading schedule or impact their reading level. On the other hand, continuous reading would enforce the known words and learn new words; thereby building their vocabulary. Reading is a great habit which should be nurtured even during the holidays.

I understand holidays is all about enjoying and relaxing! But reading need not be a tedious chore or homework; children don’t need a reading log during the holiday time. We can try to make reading fun for the kids.

How?

You may think.

Reading prompts which interests them or makes them curious to read.

For example - Read a book which has at least 15 different alphabets in the title

- This is going to be fun!

For this summer holiday season, I prepared these prompts (used some of them) to encourage my kids to read a variety of books. If you have a small child who is a beginner reader, make these prompts based on their interests so they would want to read their favourite author or book. For older children, make it a challenge to read diverse prompts so they can try new books.

Share those prompts with them and encourage them. You could also have some rewards to motivate them to read. Or make it as a reading challenge with a group of friends.

You can always encourage them to read in whatever language they want or a combination of languages if they want to.

I'm sharing the prompts which I wrote down as examples. Use these prompts as a base to get some ideas to make your child read. If you have some more prompts, please share it in the comment section so it can be useful for everyone.
